How Good Are Decaffeinated Coffee Pods?

Jason Uvios

Under normal circumstances, decaffeinated pods are grown straightway from the bush. It is a distinct possibility that it is possible to make such a type of as per available Japanese research. The usual procedure that is adopted to make decaffeinated is by using the chemical leeching process out of the normal coffee pods. There is an exciting possibility of making decaffeinated pods by creating transgenic coffee plants that have reduced caffeine content (about 70%). However this exciting news is still undergoing an advanced research study.

This inspiring study was conducted on a species of coffee plant called Coffea canephora from which scientists made a transgenic variety with a suppressed gene which generally activates one of the three enzymes that are involved in the synthesis of caffeine. With this experiment it was found that the caffeine level was reduced to the level of 70%, which indicated that it is definitely possible to produce decaffeinated coffee pods.

It will not be very surprising for us to hear about decaffeinated beans that could possibly be matching the natural and rich taste of caffeinated beans, if not better. Recent experiments involved brewing decaffeinated coffee from the pods sourced from experimental plants. As of now, the research is still in its infant stages and it may take a while to come out with a valid result.

Presently, there are three types of decaffeinated pods that are used commercially in big coffee houses and super markets. Decaffeinated can be prepared by:

•Using chemical solvents,
•Employing super critical gas isolation and,
•Making caffeine free extracts

These methods of producing pods are very expensive and more often the taste of the obtained by these methods are very poor. Now, researchers are turning their attention on creating decaffeinated pods from Coffea Arabica which is being cultivated in many countries of late.

Though such pods are welcomed by health conscious people, many enthusiasts still do not agree to this new concept. They are unison in saying that you need to taste the original flavor by using naturally occurring beans to believe it. However, decaffeinated pods may herald a new era of biotechnological innovations that may pave way for a new revolution. Welcome to the world of decaffeinated coffee pods that is all set to promote caffeine free coffee world!

Quite a makeover in the offing for pods!
